It’s been a long wait but Summer 2021 sees the return of some of the long-awaited festivals. Here’s the latest:

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Billed as one of the biggest festivals celebrating art and culture, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events. The Fringe will return from 06 to 30 August 2021. Registration for Fringe 2021 will open on 05 May.

Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival

April is far from summer, but the sun is out and  Edinburgh is bathed in its warmth. Taking it a notch up is the  Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th April, held online. The best of Scottish Jazz and Blues will pay tribute to their musical heroes in five unmissable gigs over the weekend.

Edinburgh International Children’s Festival

Edinburgh International Children’s Festival presents a new take this year with a hybrid programme of online and outdoor events, featuring theatre and dance for young people. The festival will also include a series of free pop-up artistic encounters, walkabout characters and sound trails happening across Edinburgh. 25th May to 6th June 2021.

Linlithgow

Not exactly an escape to nature,  but a visit to Linlithgow is not to be missed. Set in the heart of greenery and natural beauty this beautiful little historic village. The fourth Saturday of the month marks the arrival of the Farmers Market who bring a selection of the finest, local, seasonal produce.  The striking ruins of tits historic royal castle set against beautiful waters is a sight to behold. Located directly behind 44 Curzon Street by Mansley, Shepherd Market was developed in 1735-46 by Edward Shepherd and comprises a number of small side streets with a charming square and piazza.  Today it houses a variety of boutique shops, restaurants and impressive Victorian pubs.

In the 1680’s, King James II established a fair on the site of Shepherd Market mainly for the purpose of cattle trading.  The infamous 15 day fair grew in popularity and size, attracting both the rich and poor.  The gentrification of the area in the 17th century killed off the May-fair with the building of many grand houses although the name remains. Local architect and developer (Edward Shepherd) was commissioned to develop the site. It was completed in the mid 18th century, with paved alleys, a duck pond, and a two-storey market, topped with a theatre.

During the 1920’s, Shepherd Market was an ultra-fashionable address for some of London’s most refined inhabitants, who lived there like characters in a play by Noel Coward. The writer Michael Arlen rented rooms opposite The Grapes public house, and used Shepherd Market as the setting for his best-selling 1924 novel “The Green Hat”. The book also went on to become a hit Broadway play and a film starring Greta Garbo.

The village-like area around Shepherd Market still has something of a jaunty reputation. It was round the corner at 9 Curzon Place that Cass Elliot (Mama Cass) of The Mamas and Papas died in July 1974, and, four years later, Keith Moon, drummer with The Who, died of an overdose. In the 1980s Shepherd Market was where politician and best-selling author Jeffrey Archer met the prostitute Monica Coghlan, an encounter which he tried to cover up in a court of law, and which eventually led to his imprisonment.

Next to Shepherd Market is Half Moon Street, where the fictional Wooster, the perfect upper-class Mayfair resident and his faithful valet Jeeves of the P.G. Wodehouse’s novels lived and where in 1763 the real James Boswell (newly arrived from Edinburgh) took lodgings and wrote his defamatory diary.

Many locals describe Shepherd Market as ‘The Heart of Mayfair’. It is a truly unique and fascinating part of London that must be seen.

Edinburgh’s Grassmarket is a historic market place and an events space in the Old Town of Edinburgh, Just a short walk away from The Knight Residence by Mansley

The Grassmarket is located directly below Edinburgh Castle and forms part of one of the main east-west vehicle arteries through the city centre. It adjoins the Cowgate and Candlemaker Row at the east end, the West Bow (the lower end of Victoria Street) in the north-east corner, King’s Stables Road to the north west and the West Port to the west. Leading off from the south-west corner is the Vennel, on the east side of which can still be seen some of the best surviving parts of the Flodden and Telfer town walls.

The view to the north, dominated by the castle, has long been a favourite subject of painters and photographers, making it one of the iconic views of the city.

History

First mentioned in the Registrum Magni Sigilii Regum Scotorum (1363) as “the street called Newbygging [new buildings] under the castle”, the Grassmarket was, from 1477, one of Edinburgh’s main market places, a part of which was given over to the sale of horse and cattle (the name apparently deriving from livestock grazing in pens beyond its western end).

Daniel Defoe, who visited Edinburgh in the 1720s, reports the place being used for two open air markets: the “Grass-market” and the “Horse-market”. off the West Bow at the north-east corner, considerably altered in the Victorian period, he wrote, “This street, which is called the Bow, is generally full of wholesale traders, and those very considerable dealers in iron, pitch, tar, oil, hemp, flax, linseed, painters’ colours, dyers, drugs and woods, and such like heavy goods, and supplies country shopkeepers, as our wholesale dealers in England do. And here I may say, is a visible face of trade; most of them have also warehouses in Leith, where they lay up the heavier goods, and bring them hither, or sell them by patterns and samples, as they have occasion.”

An inscribed flagstone in the central pavement in front of the White Hart Inn indicates the spot where a bomb exploded during a Zeppelin raid on the city on the night of 2–3 April 1916. Eleven people were killed in the raid, though none at this particular spot.

The Grassmarket was also a traditional place of public executions.

A memorial near the site once occupied by the gibbet was created by public subscription in 1937. It commemorates over 100 Covenanters who died on the gallows between 1661 and 1688 during the period known as The Killing Time. Their names, where known, are recorded on a nearby plaque. One obdurate prisoner’s refusal to escape death by swearing loyalty to the Crown prompted the snide remark by the Duke of Rothes that he had chosen to “glorify God in the Grassmarket”.

In 1736 the Grassmarket formed the backdrop to the Porteous Riots which ended in the lynching of a captain of the Town Guard. A plaque near the traditional execution site now marks the spot where an enraged mob brought Captain Porteous’s life to a brutal end.

A popular story in Edinburgh is that of Margaret Dickson, a fishwife from Musselburgh who was hanged in the Grassmarket in 1724 for murdering her illegitimate baby shortly after birth. After the hanging, her body was taken back to Musselburgh on a cart. However, on the way there she awoke. Since, under Scots Law, her punishment had been carried out, she could not be executed for a second time for the same crime (only later were the words “until dead” added to the sentence of hanging). Her “resurrection” was also to some extent seen as divine intervention, and so she was allowed to go free. In later life (and legend) she was referred to as “half-hangit Maggie”. There is now a pub in the Grassmarket named after her.

In 1775, the young advocate James Boswell’s first criminal client, John Reid from Peeblesshire, was hanged in the Grassmarket for sheep-stealing. Boswell, convinced of his client’s innocence and citing Maggie Dickson’s miraculous recovery, hatched a plan to recover Reid’s corpse immediately after execution and have it resuscitated by surgeons. He was finally dissuaded from this course of action by a friend who warned him that the condemned man had become resigned to his fate and might well curse Boswell for bringing him back to life.

Sir Walter Scott described his memory of the Grassmarket gibbet in his novel The Heart of Midlothian published in 1818.

Hanging day was announced to the public, by the appearance of a huge black gallows-tree towards the eastern end of the Grassmarket. This ill-omened apparition was of great height, with a scaffold surrounding it, and a double ladder placed against it, for the ascent of the unhappy criminal and the executioner. As this apparatus was always arranged before dawn, it seemed as if the gallows had grown out of the earth in the course of one night, like the production of some foul demon; and I well remember the fright with which the schoolboys, when I was one of their number, used to regard these ominous signs of deadly preparation. On the night after the execution the gallows again disappeared, and was conveyed in silence and darkness to the place where it was usually deposited, which was one of the vaults under the Parliament House, or courts of justice.”

The old market area is surrounded by pubs, clubs, and local retail shops. Many students live in the Grassmarket, though its openness (due to the large market space) and proximity to the centre of town now tend to increase house prices.

North-east corner of the Grassmarket. Up until 1764 public hangings took place on a spot just to the left of the yellow traffic sign. Thereafter, they were carried out in the Lawnmarket until the last hanging there in 1864.

Most buildings are Victorian but some, such as the White Hart Inn and its encompassing tenement are early 18th century. Several modern buildings on its southern side disrupt the unity of the otherwise old streetscape.

For most of its history the Grassmarket was one of the poorest areas of the city, associated in the nineteenth century with an influx of poor Irish and the infamous murderers Burke and Hare. Up until quite recently it was still to some extent associated with homelessness and drunkenness before its rapid gentrification as a popular tourist spot.

The area is, and always has been, dominated by a series of public houses. In recent years many have become more family-friendly and include dining areas. The council has recently further encouraged these to spill over onto outside pavements, giving the place a more Continental atmosphere.

The Grassmarket was subject to a streetscape improvement scheme carried out 2009-2010 at a cost of £5 million. Measures aimed at making the area more pedestrian-friendly included the extension of pavement café areas and the creation of an “events zone”.

The “shadow” of a gibbet was added in dark paving on the former gallows site (next to the Covenanters’ Monument) and the line of the Flodden Wall at the western end delineated by a strip of lighter paving from the Vennel on the south side to the newly created Granny’s Green Steps on the north side.

Inverness is one of the oldest towns in Scotland and the history dates back to 6th century AD, when it was an ancient city where St Columba was meant to have visited King Brude a Pictish King. Inverness means ‘Mouth of the River Ness’ and is known as the capital to the Highlands of Scotland. Similar to Edinburgh this city is not only known as a capital city but  also it has a castle which sits on a cliff overlooking the River Ness in Inverness, Scotland.

Inverness is near a famous battlefield ‘Culloden Moor’ where the battle of Culloden took place. Bonnie Prince Charlie led the Jacobites into battle in April 1746 in a failed attempt against the Duke of Cumberland son of King George II. Over 1200 died that day in less than an hour and the Battle of Culloden is still known today as ‘The Bloody Battle’.

Culloden Battlefield & Visitor Centre

Today you can still visit Culloden Moor where the Battle of Culloden took place.  The battle lines have been restored to show a true picture of what the battlefield was like on that fateful day. There is an impressive visitor centre with an interesting interactive exhibition, with artefacts and authentic weapons which were found on the battlefield. A great day out for all the family and for fans of the tv show Outlander.

Inverness Castle

Inverness Castle is located next to Highland Apartments by Mansley and both are in such close proximity they share views of the River Ness. Inverness Castle dates back to the 18th century and sits on a previous structure dating back to the 11th century where Macbeth was meant to have murdered King Duncan in the year 1040 as featured in Shakespeare’s tragedy. Today the castle is home to the Sheriff Court and is not open to the public but the castle grounds are definitely worth a visit.

Inverness Museum & Art Gallery

Inverness Museum & Art Gallery is a few minutes walk from Highland Apartments by Mansley and admission is free. The original museum opened in 1881 and displayed Highland and Jacobite collections. The museum was re-located to Castle Wynd in 1963 and in 2006 underwent a £1.3 million refurbishment. Today the museum and art gallery exhibits paintings by famous Scottish artists, Highland memorabilia and archaeology.

Urquhart Castle

Approximately 13 miles south-west of Inverness stands Urquhart Castle which overlooks Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland and the views are spectacular. It was a medieval fortress dating back to the 13th century and it’s ruins are now one of the most visited.  The Castle has witnessed some historical events in Scotland’s history.  St Columba was said to have performed miracles here in the 6th century. The castle was embroiled in the ‘Wars of Independence’ and this is where Lords of the Isles fought for power until it was destroyed in the Jacobite Risings. Climb the Grant tower and visit the prison cell that held the legendary Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn. With fantastic views of Loch Ness you might even see ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness monster!

The official North Coast 500 Route (NC500) is a circular road trip that starts and ends at Inverness Castle and is Scotland’s version of the famous U.S. Route 66. With 516 miles (830.4 km) of breathtaking scenery, this is Scotland’s largest road trip around the north coast of Scotland. Originally created as a tourism project by the North Highland Initiative and Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, to develop the economy and to showcase the best of the north Highlands of Scotland.

NC500 have created an interactive map with various itineraries to suit all interests. Whether you are driving, motorcycling, cycling, camping, an adventure enthusiast, walker or golfer you can use the route as a guide to create your own personal experience. Below are some of the locations and places to visit outlined on the official route map.

INVERNESS

The North Coast 500 route covers amazing destinations and the official starting point for this spectacular road trip begins in Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. Inverness is the largest city in the Scottish Highlands, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. The route starts at the famous Inverness Castle where Shakespeare’s Macbeth was set in the 11th century.  Two famous historical battles took place near Inverness, the 11th-century Blàr Nam Fèinne battle led by King Malcolm III of Scotland against the Norwegians and Thorfinn the Mighty, Earl of Orkney. The second, Battle of Culloden at Culloden Moor the final Jacobite rising in 1746. Today Inverness is a vibrant city, with a variety of restaurants, bars and shops. Mix the old with the new and combine visits to the ancient battlefields, museums, castles and Loch Ness to visit ‘Nessie’.

APPLECROSS

Next, the route takes you to the tiny village of Applecross – a remote peninsula located in Wester Ross approx 79 miles from Inverness – to start your north coastal route journey. The rugged landscape has dramatic scenery and you can see the Isle of Skye across the water from Applecross on a clear day. This tiny village has a campsite and the Applecross Inn is worth a visit with beautiful seafood and homemade ice cream supplied by Aron, Applecross Ices. There is an abundance of wildlife from red deer, whales, dolphins and eagles. Highland ‘Coo’ tend to travel on the NC500 route too!

LOCH TORRIDON

From Applecross the route continues to Loch Torridon, a sea Loch on the West Coast of Scotland. The Loch is surrounded by mountains, Torridon Hills, which provide the most beautiful dramatic scenery due to the Torridonian sandstone rocks, the oldest sedimentary rocks in Scotland dating back one billion years. The Loch provides important shellfish where langoustines are caught using creels which are exported to Europe.

DURNESS

Head further up the North West Coast approx 149 miles from Loch Torridon you will find the village of Durness. The picturesque Durness Beach has glorious white sandy beaches with turquoise waters with spectacular scenery.  A great stop for a relaxing walk and to explore the nearby Smoo Cave, the largest sea cave in Britain.

JOHN O’GROATS

Located approx 90 miles from Durness is the village, John O’Groats which is famous for it’s iconic ‘end of the road’ location. The end point of a long distance route with the start point from Land’s End (Cornwall) which measures the whole length of Britain south-west to the northeast. Visit the Journey’s End Cafe where staff are waiting to offer you a warm welcome. The breathtaking scenery and wildlife are incredible, see puffins and seals or take a boat trip to Orkney for the day.

As you’ve reached the ‘end of the road’, it’s time to head back south through Wick, Tain, Dingwall and Muir of Ord situated on the boundary of the Black Isle peninsula. This small settlement was originally known as Tarradale, the name changed when the Muir of Ord railway station opened in 1862 in the village. Glen Ord Whisky Distillery and Visitor Centre is located on the outskirts of the village and is the last remaining single malt scotch whisky distillery on the Black Isle. This 5-star visitor attraction is open all year round and is well worth a visit with whisky tours to suit everyone from beginners to connoisseurs. Then travel a further 14 miles back to your official start point on the NC500 route, Inverness Castle.
